With a transcendental technical command he thrilled the audience in the library of the celebrated aesthete Harold Acton with Beethoven’s early Sonata Op. 10 No. 3 where his genius was already beginning to manifest itself with its profound and intense slow movement. Alkan’s pianistic genius was revealed with astonishing brilliance as his animals were let out of their cage and allowed to sprawl all over this 1876 Bechstein.
